Hugs from God

When I was in fourth grade   I went on my first trip away from home without my parents. I remember having lots of fun going on nature hikes and studying birds and plants. But the first night in the youth hostel where we stayed, I felt terribly homesick. I lay wide awake alone in the dark, listening to unfamiliar sounds around me and longing to be at home with my mom. I had only recently begun to attend a Christian Science Sunday School, where I learned about God’s great love for all of us. So I started talking to God.

Even though I couldn’t see Him, I knew God had to be there. I imagined God hugging me like my mother and telling me not to be afraid because He loved me and cared for me. Suddenly I felt comforted. A warm feeling came over me, and after that I fell asleep.

I was reminded of this experience while enjoying the many kids’ drawings of the Bible story of Ruth in this Kids’ Sentinel. Ruth had left her home and was facing many scary unknowns. Yet she went with confidence because she had learned that God, good, is always with His children.
