Sing your life!

A number of years ago, I was sitting in a large concert hall, eagerly waiting for the music to begin, when I suddenly heard a clear, firm instruction: “Sing your life!” I was surrounded by hundreds of people, with my husband quietly sitting next to me, and it was obvious that no one else had heard that message. I was shocked that it had come with such force. What did it mean? I wondered about it all that night, and asked God to tell me what it meant, since I was sure it was a message from Him and shouldn’t be ignored.

I’m not a singer, and I don’t play an instrument or read music, so it remained a puzzle for several years. Occasionally I would ask someone what it would mean to them if they were instructed to sing their life. I got some good answers, but none of them seemed to capture the spiritual sense that seemed essential to the message.

Finally, a Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly opened up the message for me. In it were two verses from Psalm 59: “I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou has been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy” (16, 17).
