LIVING WATER THAT IS NEVER IN SHORT SUPPLY

IN 1950 THE WORLD POPULATION WAS 2.5 BILLION. Today it is close to 7 billion, and the projection for 2050 is 9 billion. Every day, at least a billion people are hungry because of a lack of water to grow food. In the year 2000 some 500 million people (5 percent of the world population) lived in chronically water-short areas. By 2050 it is estimated that such areas will be home to 45 percent of the population.

Tempting as it may be to measure the supply of water, or the lack of it, against this increasing demand—and then to feel scared or discouraged—we'll get better results and help more people if we turn to a spiritual approach to this problem.

Underlying the supply of water is a spiritual concept governed by the allness and goodness of God. The Bible tells how Jesus made this point when he stopped to rest at Jacob's well at Sychar in Samaria, while he was on his way to Galilee (see John 4:5–14). A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus asked her to give him a drink. She responded, in effect, "Why are you asking me? You are a Jew and the Samaritans have nothing to do with the Jews."
