REFLECTIONS FROM A MUMBAI RESIDENT

During India's 9/11, this individual and her friend were kept from danger.

Recently Sentinel Radio spoke with NEERA KAPUR, who lives in Mumbai, India, where a major terrorist attack took place last November. These excerpts of their conversation have been edited for readability.

What do you think is at the root of terrorism?

There is a lot one can say about why these attacks take place, and as I was thinking about it, I recalled something my mother taught me and my brothers when we were very young. In India, it's common to have people helping in the home, and she told us, "We don't have servants; we have help." She explained to us that we must never discriminate or make people think that they are lower than us or that we have more than they have. That has really come to me as I've been praying about events here in Mumbai, because I think feeling discriminated against creates a sense of insecurity, a feeling of being oppressed, and that gives rise to hatred, envy, and so on.
