SYMPTOMS OF CONTAGION QUICKLY CONQUERED

Early one morning, I was called to care for an elderly relative in another state, who'd been incapacitated with the symptoms of a highly contagious gastrointestinal virus. At the time, many local news reports were describing this problem as severe, and several relatives in my family were experiencing what these reports discussed.

Happy to respond, I packed a bag and prepared myself mentally by praying with some ideas from that week's Christian Science Bible Lesson. Particularly meaningful to me were passages from Genesis 1, which speaks of us as made in the image and likeness of God, having dominion "over every creeping thing" (verse 26). To me, this meant that no belief of sickness could creep into my consciousness and establish itself as real, either about my relatives, myself, or anyone else.

I also recognized that an unselfish desire to care for someone couldn't bring pain or discomfort. I had a job to do in my relative's home, and had learned through my study of Christian Science that being a Good Samaritan couldn't expose me to anything that would separate me from God's care. This passage from Science and Health highlighted these thoughts: "The spiritual demand, quelling the material, supplies energy and endurance surpassing all other aids, and forestalls the penalty which our beliefs would attach to our best deeds" (p. 385).
