Solomon's wish
Once a very long time ago, there was a very young king named Solomon who loved God very much. He was the king of a great many people. Being the king of a great many people is a very big responsibility, so Solomon prayed to God often.
One night God appeared to Solomon in a dream. And God said, “Ask for whatever you wish and you will receive it.”
Solomon said, “Well, even though I'm king, I'm very young. If I could just understand the difference between right and wrong, then I could be a very good king indeed.”
And God answered him, “Because your wish is for the good of everyone, you will have wisdom and understanding. Plus I will give you everything else you could ever ask for as well!”
When Solomon woke up he was happy and thankful. And his wish came true, as God had promised him in the dream. Solomon became a very wise king who understood about right and wrong. He used his wisdom to settle arguments among the people. Other kings and queens came from far and wide to hear him speak. And he built a great temple to praise and thank God. Solomon also wrote beautiful ideas and poems that became part of the Bible.
Most important, the people of his kingdom were glad because they lived in peace. There were no wars as long as Solomon was king. And everyone had plenty of food to eat.
Solomon became known as the wisest and most splendid king of all time. And it all began with a prayer and a wish.
You can read about Solomon in the Bible, in First Kings, chapter 3.
