At one time, my view of womanhood was very limited. When I was in my early twenties, a doctor suggested to me (and he really believed in God), that women were the beginning of evil in the world. I accepted this as true. I thought that women should be servants to men. Consequently, I was very careful about my relationships with women. So much so that my mother was afraid that I would never be married. Finally, though, I met a woman I really loved. And I got brave and married her.
The Bible was always a source of inspiration for me. But only as I began to study Science and Health did my view of women change. Then I could understand that men and women are created equal. As Paul says, “...there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Gal 3:28 ). I understood also that God and all His children are good. So women could only be good, like God.
Even though women's rights are officially recognized in many countries, in practice we often see a completely different picture. Men still dominate women in a number of these countries.
For example, after the Russian Revolution, the constitution gave equal rights to women. And they progressed dramatically in different fields. But the fact is that the perception of the average people never changed about women in Russia.
As far as the Bible goes, some men base their understanding of women on what it says in the second chapter of Genesis (2:21-23 ), where woman is pictured as made out of man and dependent on him. They forget completely the concept put forth in the first chapter of Genesis, where “male and female” are created equal. (Genesis 1:27 ).
Opinions and beliefs formed through the ages in the minds of men cannot be erased instantly. I believe that constant and patient education of everyone, especially children, based on the truth in the Bible, will change the perception of society. All people, including children, need to learn that we are brothers and sisters.
We are all equal!
