Saved in a clash between police and students
I am so grateful for the spiritual education that I got in my Sunday School. It was there that I learned about God's love, care, and protection. This has always saved and blessed my life. God is truly “my light and my salvation” (Ps. 27:1 ).
I'm a student at one of the universities in Jakarta, where some of my student friends were killed fighting for reformation in my country. It happened in May 1998, following the 32-year regime of our former president. All university students in the country were fighting for a government that would bring a better quality of life to the whole nation and freedom from corruption and poverty.
I joined in the fight, hoping to help establish a clean government and to improve our standard of living. Hundreds of students from my university marched toward the parliament building, but the police formed a long line to force us back and prevent us from going forward.
Then a clash happened between the police and the students, who were not armed. I was in the front line, when I suddenly heard many gun shots. All the students ran away to save their lives. We were in a state of panic. We didn't know where to go. At that moment, in this panicky situation, I found it difficult to think about God's presence and power. But deep in my heart, I screamed to God for help and protection.
Then I heard a “still small voice,” like the Bible describes (I Kings 19:12 ). It was a guiding thought that led me to go into a small building, although that seemed unsafe because it was so close to the police forces. The rest of the students scattered and ran to another building, but I kept following the guidance of the “still small voice.” There were only five of us in the building, and we were all saved. Five others, who ran to the other building, were killed.
I'm so grateful to have Christian Science. It has taught me how much God really controls everything. It freed me from “the terror by night” and “the arrow that flieth by day” (Ps. 91:5 ).
It's so comforting to know that “he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways”(Ps. 91:11 ).
