I decided to leave the situation to God
When I was 16, I took a heavy load of science classes. At the beginning of the year I was very happy because I was in the same class with my friends. But my biology class included some course work that made me feel uneasy. I didn't like the idea of acquiring knowledge that seemed to pull me away from seeing myself as spiritual, as made in the “image” of God, as the Bible says (see Genesis 1:26, 27 ).
My mom suggested that I change my field of study. I considered studying economics, but such a decision seemed very difficult to make because I would have to leave my friends, which I had made not so easily. Also, I feared the criticisms of my teachers, schoolmates, and the principal of the school.
I decided, however, to leave the situation to God. My Sunday School teacher gave me some citations to read, like this verse from the Bible: “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye” (Psalms 32:8 ). And this one from a book by Mary Baker Eddy: “Now this self-same God is our helper. He pities us. He has mercy upon us, and guides every event of our careers” (Unity of Good, pp. 3-4 ). I understood then that God was my guide, that He would govern my future. And this future could only be good.
When we went to the principal and asked him to change me to an economics class, this was done immediately and without any difficulty. I was quickly able to make up one year in economics. And I was studying subjects I liked! I was even able to have lunch every day with my friends.
It's really reassuring to know that our choices don't have to be the result of our own will. Or anyone else's. If we trust God and stay faithful to Him, He will guide us.
