Breaking the grip of fear

Is it possible to be fearless in the face of great danger? The answer to this question is found in the understanding that fear is not a cause, as some believe; it is the effect of believing in two powers—good and evil, Spirit and matter. To break the mesmerism of fear, one must first be awakened out of the matter-based thought of two powers to the understanding of one power, one God, who is always good.

I had an unforgettable experience that demonstrated to me how this spiritual understanding that God is the one and only power can break the grip of fear. The truths learned in this experience have carried me through many trials in my life.

While riding in a taxi from the airport to another city, my husband and I (sitting in the front seat with the driver) were traveling along a very narrow road. The sun was fast disappearing behind the hills, and it was necessary to turn on our lights. After about a half-hour of enjoying a view of the countryside, the driver called our attention to a speeding car, coming around a bend in the road quite a distance ahead of us. The car was on our side of the road. We watched the lights of the approaching car. The taxi driver then said, with some anxiety, "That car must be moving over eighty-five miles per hour; what do you want me to do—pull over to the left lane (where we would be facing oncoming traffic) or stay in our lane?" My husband said nothing. A sense of what was right to do came to me immediately, and I said, "Stop the car, and turn off the motor."
