BACK & FORTH

a dialogue with readers

The following letter arrived one year ago, at the height of the war in the Persian Gulf. Though that brief war seems "old news" to millions of people now (though not to the families who lost a loved one), only twelve short months ago it riveted the attention of the whole world.

This letter is from a television journalist. Somehow the writer's observations about spiritual reality being "where the action is" seem even more relevant today as we think about the meaning of news and journalism.

"Dear Journal, Sentinel, and Herald staffers,

"In the midst of reading—and getting a lot out of—a religious article in The Christian Science Monitor, I feel impelled to stop and write this letter.

"What struck me while reading the article just now was how clearly the 'spiritual angle' of a story is where the action is. I work for CNN [Cable News Network]. As you can imagine, it's like being in 'the belly of the beast,' in the eye of the storm, in the nerve center, especially as war is waged. I'm grateful to be part of that, and to be present and contributing here. But my contribution only matters as much as I see the unchanged Truth in spite of what appears to be going on.

"Dozens of times I've read a Journal or Sentinel or Monitor religious article, and it really made a difference. I've never written before to tell you that. So I'm doing it now. My next and most important step, of course, is to start writing for the Christian Science periodicals myself!"
