The cleansing power of Christ

What may seem an indelible part of our makeup can be removed through prayer and spiritual regeneration.

With gusto the children started in on their curried chicken and rice. Halfway through the meal they stopped, gazing down horror at their spattered shirts. "No need to worry, boys," their mother said. "Later I'll get my tube of stain remover. Those spots will disappear in a jiffy." The kids smiled and resumed eating.

That little incident happened many years ago. But recently when I recalled it in the light of a rumor discrediting a friend's character as a good father, it occurred to me that Christ, Truth, could be thought of as a kind of universal "stain remover."

What "stains" do we need removed from our character? All imperfections—anger, egotism, envy, fear, intemperance, gossiping, laziness, lust, pride, vengeance. Referring to sin in its various forms, Christ Jesus pointed out, "All these evil things come from within, and defile the man."
