In January 1989, while I was at the beach, I felt that a condition I had been suffering from for several weeks was becoming more serious. I began to suffer from such intense pain that I asked my wife to look for a doctor. Consultation with a doctor resulted in hospitalization. The doctors urgently recommended that I submit to a gallbladder operation. I rejected the idea, although, to be honest, more out of fear of the operation itself than as a result of what I had learned through my study of Christian Science.

I decided to consult with other doctors, among them a close friend. The verdict was unanimous. I should have the operation since my gallbladder had suffered irreversible damage.

At this point, on the advice of my wife, I took the step I should have taken right at the beginning. I turned to the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner, who with much kindness led me confidently to the understanding of God's tender love for His children and to reliance on that love.

Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health: "Neither evil, disease, nor death can be spiritual, and the material belief in them disappears in the ratio of one's spiritual growth." Over a period of several months I studied deeply the Sermon on the Mount, trying to put these teachings into practice in my daily activities. The spiritual unfoldment was evident in the disappearance of fear and in a profound recognition that God always supplies good, health, and harmony to His children.

Earlier, I'd agreed to let my close friend examine me a second time, and I felt I should keep my word since he had been so kind. His analysis showed that there was no damage to the gallbladder and that the normal functioning of the gallbladder had been reestablished. Since then I have not had any trouble of this sort, nor have I suffered any limitations on what I can eat.

This testimony of gratitude to God is an expression of rejoicing for the good I've received.
