Business, safe in God's arms

The husband's business had increased to the point where a modest expansion of employees and purchase of an office and up-to-date equipment seemed progressive and sound, based on available funds and anticipated income. Then not long after such steps had been taken, a recession in the field served by the business forced into bankruptcy a number of regular clients. Outstanding fees, amounting to about a year's income, were lost, and orders greatly diminished. Although the wife's income was enough to meet expenses at home, it couldn't begin to cover the business bills.

The couple felt it was right for them to forgive those who could not pay what they owed and still to be able to meet the commitments made to others. As students of Christian Science, they prayed earnestly for moral strength and spiritual substance to keep intact the integrity they had striven to maintain in their business dealings. They leaned on God, and "the everlasting arms" of Love did not fail to uphold them. Somehow, often in ways that were surprising, all obligations—including paychecks to employees and payments on loans—were met on time.

Gradually, adjustments came about. Nonessentials were trimmed away. A full-time employee resigned to take another job and was replaced with part-time help. New clients came. Soon the business was again on its feet. And behind all this was vastly enriching spiritual progress for the couple.
