Recently I came to a point in my life where I felt the need to take Christian Science class instruction. "God is working His purpose out," says Hymn No. 82 in the Christian Science Hymnal; it was obvious to me that class instruction was an inevitable step in my spiritual growth. So I applied to a teacher of Christian Science and later was accepted. After months of studying the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings and prayerfully preparing for it, class began.
I usually commuted with friends to class, but one day I drove my touring motorcycle. On my route home I drove through a canyon that had many winding turns. Coming around one turn, I saw a stopped car in my lane on a two-lane highway, with traffic coming the other way. I tried to stop but ended up in a full lockup of my brakes. I slid into the car at about fifty miles per hour. Upon impact I was thrown into the windshield of my bike and then over the car, landing about sixty feet away.
A police report, obtained later from the officer at the scene of the incident, stated that the motorcycle driver had refused medical help for religious reasons, although appearing to have sustained abrasions to his hands, a possible fractured nose, and head injuries.
I got to the residence where I had been staying by way of the tow truck that hauled my bike. I then called my teacher, who agreed to pray for me. With her help I studied Mrs. Eddy's answer in Miscellaneous Writings (pp. 78–79 ) to the question "Has man fallen from a state of perfection?" It includes these lines: "If God is upright and eternal, man as His likeness is erect in goodness and perpetual in Life, Truth, and Love. ... The spiritual man is that perfect and unfallen likeness, coexistent and coeternal with God." The complete and infinite healing capacity of these spiritual truths guaranteed victory over the claim of accident.
The next day, although all other evidence of injury was gone, I had what appeared to be a black eye that was swollen shut. However, this was quickly healed when I corrected my view of the driver of the car by realizing that he, too, was actually God's likeness. I didn't miss a day of class.
This demonstration helped bring a deeper understanding of the all-protecting nature of divine Love. When it comes to battling false suggestions, as all the injuries I had were proved to be, the only real system of self-defense is Christian Science.
