My mother loved the Bible and read it constantly
My mother loved the Bible and read it constantly. I am grateful for this background. Through the daily study of the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly, the happy years spent in the Christian Science Sunday School, and the wonderful enlightenment of class instruction, the Bible is daily becoming the open Book of Life to me—my guide, offering solution to every problem.
While I was still a pupil in the Sunday School, there were many opportunities to use the understanding I was gaining. Later, when I was singing as church soloist, Bible truths often brought me support and healing. One Sunday this Bible message healed me of laryngitis (Ps. 118:14 ): "The Lord is my strength and song, and is become my salvation." I had no voice to sing the first hymn, but when I stood up for the solo I was in good voice. Indeed several people told me they had never heard me sing so well.
Once, while on holiday with a friend, I woke early one morning to find I could not move, even to get out of bed. As I laystill, I pondered Bible words from a solo (Isa. 60:1 ): "Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee." I wished so much that I could arise. Then I realized I could always arise mentally, through prayer—above any problem. I saw that as God's perfect child I couldn't help shining, whatever the material senses tried to say. The glory of the Lord is never absent, because God is ever present. Thanking God, I got up. When my friend awoke, I was dressed and completely well.
Another instant healing came when a sharp knife cut deeply into my finger while I was preparing vegetables for a dinner party. At first I could not stanch the blood. I recalled Mrs. Eddy said (Science and Health, p. 340), "The First Commandment is my favorite text." What it meant to me to have one God, who is Love, instead of worshiping idols! My heart was filled with gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for giving me an understanding of Father-Mother, God, to whom I can always turn with trust and confidence. The bleeding had stopped. I was able to continue dinner preparations. Later, after a happy evening, I could find no sign of a cut. This has been a beacon in my life when healings have taken longer to complete.
I have often found study of the Bible and Science and Health prepared me with the answer to a problem before the problem appeared. I was able to arise quite healed of flu in one day, when I applied the inspiration I had gained from the citations in the Bible Lesson. The greatest benefit to me from this wonderful teaching is the knowledge that one spiritualizes one's thought constantly with daily study of the Bible, and has the joy of seeing bad traits of character disappear.
