In 1940 I was instantaneously healed of a longstanding smoking habit with the help of a devoted Christian Scientist. There had been three torturous attempts to cut the habit by human means. The healing through scientific prayer has remained an assurance to me of the effectiveness of Christian Science treatment, and provides inspiration when I need to face suggestions that matter is real, attractive, or powerful.

Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 516 ), "The substance, Life, intelligence, Truth, and Love, which constitute Deity, are reflected by His creation; and when we subordinate the false testimony of the corporeal senses to the facts of Science, we shall see this true likeness and reflection everywhere." The subordination of the belief that I found pleasure in the habit to "the facts of Science" brought complete healing. My eating habits remained the same; I was able to attend meetings in smoke-filled rooms with no desire to smoke and with no effect from it; and I was never chided as a nonsmoker.

I am grateful for this healing, and for so many instances where an understanding of God's perfect creation has brought great good and healing into the lives of members of our family. We have found delightful homes when there weren't supposed to be any available; employment opportunities have evolved wonderfully; and when there wasn't regular employment, we were sustained as well or better than under normal circumstances.

Overnight, a minor irritation on my toes developed into huge blisters. I was frightened by the appearance and asked a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. The healing that followed was humanly awesome, but spiritually natural. Within one week the blisters had gone, and new skin had appeared. There was never any pain, and I was able to continue my normal activities. The lesson I learned was instantly to reverse the testimony of the senses and deny fear. Speaking of mortal mind, Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 377 ), "Remove the leading error or governing fear of this lower so-called mind, and you remove the cause of all disease as well as the morbid or excited action of any organ."

These two instances of healing are really a set of parentheses surrounding a lifetime of good received through the study and application of Christian Science. Unbounded is my gratitude for the Master, Christ Jesus, and for Mrs. Eddy, his follower, for showing us that we can see and demonstrate God's "true likeness and reflection everywhere."
