Christian Science has been a constant help to me and my family...
Christian Science has been a constant help to me and my family for many years.
When my daughter was small, my husband and I decided to return to our home state. We reached a city in the Southwest with only enough money for rent and a little food. I tried to find work, but there just didn't seem to be any. I became frightened and dismayed. In desperation, I went to a Christian Science practitioner to ask for prayerful spiritual help. The practitioner was out of the office at the time.
Exhausted, I sat in a chair and picked up a Christian Science Sentinel from a table. One of the articles I read was very interesting. It told of a couple who had had the same difficulty as ours. Their practitioner told them to go and do something for someone, asking nothing in return. They did so, and the problem was solved.
I thought to myself, "Well, I will do the same." I returned to our apartment and went next door, where a woman was ill. Without asking for pay, I cleaned her house. She was very grateful.
The next day I enrolled my daughter in school and found that there was a fund to supply lunches for her until I was able to do so myself. One of the women there gave me work in her home. With the money she paid me I ran an ad in the newspaper, and within thirty minutes all the days were filled. I had to cancel the ad.
I was very grateful for this supply, and more than grateful for the lesson learned. On page 192 in the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, are these words: "Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power." Thanks be to God for Christ Jesus, for his faithful follower, Mrs. Eddy, and for the new way of life I have found through the study of Christian Science.
