My grandmother first heard of...
My grandmother first heard of Christian Science in 1888 and brought the news of its healing power to the home of my parents. My mother gladly accepted it and was healed of catarrh. She became a devoted student of Christian Science, and we had many healings in our family.
In my own home too we have had many healings, including those of very severe burns and of a badly torn tongue. We were readily healed of so-called children's diseases and other sicknesses through reading Science and Health by our beloved Leader.
When our eldest son was about six years old, he fell out of a tree. He was carried into the house limp and unconscious; so I held him on my lap. I reached out to God in prayer, declaring the truths I had learned in my study of Christian Science. I realized that the boy's real life was not in matter but in God, Spirit. Soon he became conscious, climbed down, and went out to play.
One of my daughters came home from school one Friday evening through a raging snowstorm, so ill that she could hardly walk. She went right to bed and asked me to read to her. She was a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School and had been taught the healing power of Christian Science; so it was natural for her to turn to God in time of need.
I read the Bible Lesson from the Quarterly to her. I also read some of Jesus' healings from the Bible and some articles from the Christian Science periodicals, and we talked together of the truth until late that evening.
The next day she kept me close to her, reading and talking the truth. By evening she did not seem to be any better, and I asked her whether I should call a Christian Science practitioner to help her. She answered, "Why, we are getting along all right."
That quieted my fears, and from then on she improved rapidly. By morning, which was Sunday, she was able to sit up, and she urged me to go to church and to take the other children to Sunday School. She was ready to go to school by Tuesday morning, having missed only one day.
Class instruction was a wonderful experience, giving me more assurance of the truth and lifting my thought to greater endeavor. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church.—(Mrs.) Mary A. Sanders, Wichita, Kansas.
