Fourteen years ago I testified...
Fourteen years ago I testified in the Sentinel to the healing of asthma and also of grief at the sudden passing on of my mother. In the intervening years I have had many other proofs of the healing and protecting power of the ever-present Christ, which, when understood and intelligently applied, solves all problems.
A sciatic difficulty developed while I was serving as a Reader in a Christian Science Society. For a month or two I was able to continue my duties on Sundays, even though during the week it was very difficult to get about the house. My case was somewhat like that of the actor mentioned by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, on page 261 of Science and Health. This man, though painfully crippled, responded so completely to his cue each night that he was able to play his part wholly free from any evidence of disability. However, the condition finally confined me to my bed.
The pain was severe, but it forced me to search the Scriptures and to study the weekly Bible Lesson, outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly, more thoroughly than ever before; and I found much comfort and encouragement in our hymns. The blessing of class instruction and the yearly association meeting upheld my faith and conviction that Christian Science would heal me.
With the constant help of a practitioner the healing did come, but not until many needed lessons were learned. It was clearly seen that reformation of thought was necessary. This included the giving up of a false sense of personal responsibility, which is sometimes a display of human will and domination.
God's love and protection were again evident when a serious fire within ten feet of my premises threatened them. I called for help from the practitioner mentioned above, and within minutes the danger was averted, only slight damage having been caused to my premises. I can truthfully say that not even the smell of smoke entered my house.
How grateful we should be for our periodicals! Mrs. Eddy intended them to bless mankind, and that they are doing so is seen from the following incident. I was faced with an expensive but necessary repair to my property, but had no apparent means to meet it. When I turned to God in prayer, the following words from Psalm 119 came to me: "Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law."
An editorial in The Herald of Christian Science (French Edition) so uplifted my thought as to what supply really is, namely spiritual ideas, that I knew my need would be met. Within a week or two funds came from an unexpected source, and the entire expense was taken care of.
We read on page 66 of Science and Health, "Trials are proofs of God's care." The above experiences helped me to gain an enlarged sense of God and of the power of Christ, Truth, as explained in Christian Science.— (Mrs.) Eleanor C. McCallum, Biddeford, Maine.
