Ever-operative Truth

The Christian Science Reading Room holds many blessings for those who are receptive to the revelation of Christian Science. Through study of the Bible in conjunction with the writings of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and through reading other authorized literature, individuals learn that freedom from erroneous conditions is won through an understanding of God. Thus is fulfilled the Master's promise (John 8:32 ), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Mrs. Eddy indicates the ever-availability of God's healing power when she writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 271 ), "Christ's Christianity is the chain of scientific being reappearing in all ages, maintaining its obvious correspondence with the Scriptures and uniting all periods in the design of God."

In the Reading Rooms it is the happy privilege of librarians to introduce this new-old truth to many who are seeking a provable religion. The Reading Room provides an atmosphere conducive to quiet, reflective work for all those who wish to study. Many healings are recorded as taking place in Reading Rooms.

A librarian writes:

"We read in the Bible (Ps. 1): 'Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly. ... But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.' An earnest student of Christian Science proved these words, thus regaining her inspiration and finding healing, much to the joy of us all. For three weeks she spent the greater part of each day in the Reading Room.

"The first time we saw her, she was walking with the aid of two canes. As she talked with us, we discerned that her thought was filled with self-condemnation and discouragement because she had not been able to prove her dominion over this problem, as she had with others. We lovingly assured her that this condition had no more power to resist the Christ, Truth, than had any other difficulty that had challenged her faith in the power of Truth to heal and that divine Love, acknowledged and realized, confers harmony.

"It was a joy to witness her humble desire to regain her inspiration, which, Mrs. Eddy says, restores in full the Christly garment (see Science and Health, p. 242). Soon she had discarded one of the canes, and when she said good-by to us, she walked out with the remaining one on her arm. Her gratitude for the Reading Room, as well as for the love and encouragement expressed to her, was unbounded."

From a Reading Room committee we hear: "A retired teacher became discouraged because of her professional inactivity. Mrs. Eddy's words from the textbook were called to her attention: 'Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul' (Science and Health, p. 60). She was encouraged to study this statement with the help of the Concordances to the writings of our Leader. Through her earnest work, her thought was so uplifted to a deeper understanding of man's selfhood as the child of God that she soon saw evidence of it. She gratefully accepted a lecture engagement at a college and an opportunity to serve part time in two schools."

Another librarian writes:

"A man was introduced to Christian Science through this Reading Room. Because he was unemployed, he felt he could not afford to buy Science and Health. Over a period of several months he made use of our free lending library.

"During this time the librarians had the privilege of answering his questions and witnessing his sincere approach to the study of Christian Science. When he finally secured a position, he purchased his own copies of the Bible and Science and Health.

"As he continued to rely on God, his progress was steady. He returned recently to obtain a copy of the other writings of our Leader in the volume entitled Prose Works and told of further evidences of unfolding good in his experience. He and his wife were now able to build a new home. He joyously gave credit for his progress to a better understanding of God. Moreover, he had come to realize that the truth had always been available; he needed only to recognize it and accept it."
