It was during the First World War...
It was during the First World War that I became interested in Christian Science. When I was called into the armed services, I had my wife and two children to support, and I was fearful that I might not return to take care of them.
While I was stationed at Aldershot, the librarian of the Christian Science Reading Room there helped me to overcome my fears during my training, and I am ever grateful to her for her helpful encouragement.
I was eventually sent to Italy, and at this time I was presented with a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The study of this textbook taught me that God is indeed my refuge and strength; and I am grateful that because of the protection afforded me by this understanding, I returned home safely after the cessation of hostilities.
Through my study of Christian Science, I have had many healings.
One instantaneous healing took place when I was trying to reach a practitioner by telephone from a call box. I had experienced considerable difficulty in reaching the call box because of pain in my legs. Although I could not get an answer, yet as a result of my own work and my desire to reach out to God, I left the telephone free from the difficulty. The next day I wrote to the Reading Room librarian, whom I had endeavored to reach, and in her reply she said, "Although you could get no answer to your telephone call, divine Love knew your need."
Some years later I had another beautiful healing. I was pruning some trees. When descending the ladder, I thought I had reached the bottom and fell to the cement path. At first I felt unable to move, because I thought some of my ribs were broken; but I held to the truth of being, and, declaring all the spiritual truths that I knew, I managed to get up.
On my way home I telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner, but it was difficult for me to talk and explain to her my difficulty. I found myself saying, "I cannot get my breath."
The reply came, "What a lie!" She began treatment at once, and later I went to see her. In a day or two she wrote, affirming the truth, and within a week I was healed. No other person knew anything about this, not even my wife. I used no bandages or medicine, but relied solely on divine Mind.
At another time my leg developed sores, which resulted in great irritation. I used a bandage to cover the leg, but employed no material means to allay the pain. When I began to see that this claim was mental and that one cannot scratch an irritating thought, I removed the bandage. I decided not to touch the leg or to look at it; but I prayed for grace to know the unreality of the condition.
Finally the realization came clearly that there is no inaction, inflammation, discoloration, sore, or scab in all of God's creation. With that, I felt no more irritation or discomfort. In a few days new skin appeared, and I thanked God, who is indeed a very present help in trouble.
I am grateful for all the blessings I have received through the study of Christian Science, for membership in The Mother Church, and for the protection which is afforded us through this membership.—Wilfred Duffin Evans, Welling, Kent, England.
