THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST

What a thought-provoking name our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, gave to the church which she and her early students established in 1879—the Church of Christ, Scientist. We of a later day who are used to hearing it referred to in our branch church services may need to pause occasionally and ponder the full import of the title and the real mission of our Church.

The "Historical Sketch" in the Manual of The Mother Church by our Leader states (p. 17), "On motion of Mrs. Eddy, it was voted,—To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing."

The organization which eventuated from this meeting became The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, and gradually grew to include the thousands of branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science Societies found in many parts of the world.
