In the Bible we read (Eccl. 9: 8),...

In the Bible we read (Eccl. 9:8), "Let thy garments be always white." The first time I was made conscious of these words, I had been prayerfully working in Christian Science for some time to overcome an unwelcome skin condition. During this period, I recalled many testimonies in which individuals told of the desirability of not looking at the physical manifestations of any injury or discordant condition. I remember wishing that this were possible, but while shaving every morning I was forced to look at the condition presented to me in the mirror. Relief was slow in coming. Every time one spot cleared up, another appeared.

It was at this point that I heard these words from Ecclesiastes read from the desk of a Church of Christ, Scientist, at a Wednesday evening testimony meeting: "Let thy garments be always white." At first the statement meant nothing to me, but it stayed with me. Because the words kept coming back, I realized that they were a message for me.

To my sense, the meaning was somewhat as follows: a "garment" is an article of clothing. "White" means without spot or blemish, pure. Thus to let our garments be always white is to clothe ourselves in spotless purity. With this interpretation, the meaning became clear, and I knew I had an answer to my prayers. Within a very short time, the unsightly condition had vanished. My gratitude to God was heartfelt, boundless.
