Christian Science has been my...

Christian Science has been my only remedy for forty years. I am deeply grateful for our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, and for Mrs. Eddy's unselfed labors in giving us her writings and the Christian Science periodicals. Also I am grateful for the loving help of friends and relatives. In a family of four children we have had many healings. A few of the difficulties healed were scarlet fever, ptomaine poisoning, and the aftereffects of influenza.

When faced with a problem of pests, I studied the paragraph on page 514 of Science and Health in which Mrs. Eddy writes, "All of God's creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible." Also I studied the twenty-sixth verse of the first chapter of Genesis and a number of articles in our literature. As a result, many so-called laws concerning plants, animals, and birds were broken. When I read what our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says about serpents on page 515 of Science and Health, my aversion to snakes was overcome.

One day two others and I went for a hike in the country. As I crossed a fence I stepped into a nest of yellow jackets. Instantly they swarmed over me, and I was stung many times. My sister used the statement from Science and Health (p. 393 ), "Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation." In addition, I kept knowing the truth about the situation. There was no swelling or redness, and the only aftereffect was a burning sensation the next morning followed by an itching sensation which lasted awhile and then left. For the protection I had in this experience, I am indeed grateful.

I had often wondered if I would rely wholly on Christian Science treatment in a serious crisis. The opportunity came to find out. Our daughter had been seriously ill four days with whooping cough, and it looked as if she could not live another twenty-four hours. We were having Christian Science help, and my husband clung to the statement (ibid., p. 275), "Matter has no life to lose, and Spirit never dies." I saw clearly that if I asked for medical help it would only increase my fear. The practitioner called on the fifth day and gave the child a treatment. In half an hour after she left, the fever was gone, breathing was normal, and the child wanted to play outdoors.

A growth on our son's neck was very stubborn. One evening I was very much discouraged, for we had had help for him for several weeks. However, I remembered that Mrs. Eddy encourages us to contend persistently for the truth, and I tried to do so. That night the growth opened and drained, and our son was free. The studying we did during these experiences did much to enlarge our understanding of God and of man's relation to Him. I am grateful for the help of Christian Science in the minutiae of our daily lives.—(Mrs.) Bertha Byrd, Newcomerstown, Ohio.
