LISTENING FOR GOD'S VOICE

No more convincing and comforting evidence of God's changeless love for man is to be found than in the Christianly scientific concept of the ever-present Christ. The Bible abounds in inspiring accounts of those men and women who, having learned to listen to the inward voice, were in turn able to teach others to hear and obey the same call. One is reminded of Abraham and Sarah entertaining angels and being rewarded with the promised son who was to perpetuate the line later known as the children of Israel. One thinks of Hannah in the temple and her fervent talk with God; of the child Samuel later born to her and of his obedient answer to God's call (I Sam. 3:10) : "Speak; for thy servant heareth." One remembers Elijah's raising of the widow's dead child and her grateful statement (I Kings 17:24), "Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth."

What enabled these children of men to prove the presence of God and His guidance in their daily affairs? Was it something that set them apart and made them different from other mortals? No, all of us have the same capacity and the same possibilities. The only difference is that these thinkers consciously listened for the voice of God and accepted the Word which came to thought as divine guidance.

From childhood our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, had read and pondered the Scriptures until the great revelation of God's ever-presence came with her healing in 1866. Then followed those spiritually illumined years of study which unfolded the Science of this healing and ultimated in the writing of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Subsequent events—the establishment of the Church of Christ, Scientist, the founding of The Christian Science Publishing Society, the gradual evolution of the Manual of The Mother Church, and one by one the protective agencies which came into being—show how faithfully and wholeheartedly Mrs. Eddy listened for God's voice before taking any human footstep or launching any new activity which concerned her Church.
