During the whole period of the...
During the whole period of the severe bombing of London I stayed at home carrying on my normal duties in the house, and also those of the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, of which I am a member. Although these times were often very uncomfortable, I was so upheld and sustained by Christian Science that only once do I remember not being able to keep my hands steady when bombs were falling around. On that occasion I sat down and played hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal and sang them with friends who were in the house.
I recall an occasion when I had patiently to trust God and His loving care when my husband was working in another badly bombed town and I could get no message through for days.
I am sincerely grateful to a Christian Science practitioner who helped me to keep my thoughts above the din of error, and to prove that I dwelt in the clear and peaceful realm of Mind, God. I was filled with gratitude to see this clearer thinking being extended to those who came within my realm of thought.
This experience of proving that I dwelt in the universe of Mind, God, so protected and preserved my peace that I was not witness to a single calamity. I was sure that by keeping my vision true to spiritual reality, and seeing only as God sees, I was doing the highest and best that I could for all mankind.
These truly were testing times, but such is the nature of the faith and understanding of students of Christian Science that it never once occurred to me to believe that there is in reality any other power than that of God.
The words from "Pulpit and Press" by Mrs. Eddy (p. 2 ), "The real house in which 'we live, and move, and have our being' is Spirit, God, the eternal harmony of infinite Soul," helped me to preserve my sense of home, for I realized that I could never lose my home, because it was already established in Mind, God.
I also learned that we cannot be in two states of consciousness at the same time, and truly when we are "absent from the body" (material sense) we are "present with the Lord" in spiritual consciousness. The fact became apparent that there are not two states of consciousness to be in, but only one—that spiritual consciousness which is God's expression of Himself.
I cannot in words convey my gratitude to God for Christian Science.—(Mrs.) Mildred May Bryner, London, England.
