The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Durango, Colorado (First Church).
Lecturer: Miss Florence Middaugh; introduced by Mrs. Cordelia Burton, who said:—

In the book of James we find this statement: "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much."

The truth of this statement has been proved in my own experience. On one occasion, about midnight, I became very ill with what seemed to be ptomaine poisoning. The following day, my husband telegraphed a Christian Science practitioner. Within two hours I was completely healed. This occurred sixteen years ago. Christian Science has been tested in our home many times and has not been found wanting.

Bridgeport, Connecticut (Second Church).
Lecturer: Richard J. Davis; introduced by Miss Helen E. Bradley, who said:—

Over nineteen hundred years ago, after Christ Jesus prayed for his disciples, he also prayed for you and for me. He said, according to the Gospel of John, "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us." Jesus prayed for our oneness with God —that we might be in harmony with good.

Christian Science is the answer to that prayer, enabling men to exemplify oneness with their creator. The application of this Science is healing many of sin and sickness, criticism and self-righteousness.

Swindon, Wiltshire, England (Society).
Lecturer: Ralph B. Scholfield; introduced by Gordon William Flower, who said:—

Our Master said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." I have proved these words to be true. Before I knew of Christian Science I had suffered for over eighteen years from an incurable disease; in addition to this, a growth appeared, for which an operation was advised.

My wife was told by an eminent physician that it would be impossible for me to live more than two months. I was then a physical wreck and an atheist; sick unto death and godless. Through reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I was healed of the incurable disease, and the growth entirely disappeared within ten days. Moreover, I found a God whose presence I could prove, for Christian Science revealed Him to me for the first time.

One of my children broke her kneecap, and through the ministrations of Christian Science was healed and running about with her playmates within two days. Another child was burned beyond hope of recovery. She, too, was healed through Christian Science treatment—there is not a sign of a scar on her today.

Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 111 ), "The Principle of divine metaphysics is God; the practice of divine metaphysics is the utilization of the power of Truth over error; its rules demonstrate its Science." Anyone in this audience can prove, as I have proved, that no condition or circumstance, however alarming or formidable it may appear to be, can hinder or fetter the power of God.

Rice Lake, Wisconsin (Society).
Lecturer: Miss Margaret Morrison; introduced by Miss Bernice Elsbury, who said:—

"The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword." So it is written in the epistle to the Hebrews. The realization of the truth of these words brought instantaneous healing to me after several years of illness, during which time many material methods had failed to bring the needed help.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 67 ), "Grace and Truth are potent beyond all other means and methods." To all who are seeking health, happiness, a sense of security, and peace of mind, be their problem great or small, physical, mental, or moral, Christian Science offers practical and ever-ready aid through the spiritual understanding of God, the same God who, in the words of the Psalmist, "forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases."

Eastport, Maine (Society).
Lecturer: Judge Samuel W. Greene; introduced by Miss Anna L. Cook, who said:—

A Christian Science lecture is always a happy occasion, for it affords Scientists the joy of sharing with their friends and neighbors the wonderful blessing that has come into their lives. To them Christian Science is the "pearl of great price" of which Christ Jesus spoke, as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew.

I found this "pearl of great price" thirty-seven years ago, and I am happy to tell you that during this period Christian Science has been my only physician. It has healed me of tuberculosis of the throat, sprained ankle, dislocated ankle, a nervous trouble, and many other discordant conditions, mental, physical, and financial.

Pittsfield, Massachusetts (First Church).
Lecturer: Frank Bell; introduced by Eugene F. Fish, who said:—

The teachings of Christian Science are based on the Bible, and as proof we can turn to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, where our Leader writes, on page 126, "I have set forth Christian Science and its application to the treatment of disease just as I have discovered them." Farther on she says: "The Bible has been my only authority. I have had no other guide in 'the straight and narrow way' of Truth."

Students of Christian Science turn to the Bible and Science and Health for their daily guidance. This study imparts a better understanding of God, and of the demonstrations of Christ Jesus; it gives the student poise and peace of mind, and enables him to demonstrate for himself, in some degree, the teachings of Christian Science, making him a better man and a better neighbor.

I have been healed physically and mentally through the application of Christian Science, and needless to say I am grateful. As it is set forth in Psalms: "I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, ... and he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God."
