"The prayer that reforms the...
"The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love," is the heartening opening message of the first chapter of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As the years go by, proof after proof is given to me of the truth of these wonderful words, and I should like to give a few experiences that show the immediate and effective results of applying in our lives this great Science, discovered by Mrs. Eddy.
Because I have experienced so many blessings in the past through the healing power of Christian Science, this spiritual method of healing was applied in the case of a recent serious injury, even when to human sense and to those around me medical and hospital aid seemed necessary.
In attempting to jump a creek, when with some friends in the country, I wrenched my leg and injured my knee. I had to be carried to the house, a short distance away, and a doctor was called to examine me. There had been a dislocation and severely sprained ligaments, and I was advised to have an X ray to determine the extent of my injury.
I asked to be taken to my home in town, and refused any more medical aid and the offer of an examination at the hospital. I immediately called a Christian Science practitioner to take up the healing work. I was very grateful that I myself could silently realize the power of God and man's inseparability from His presence and care, and I am grateful to the practitioner who gave me such loving help at this time. While there seemed to be some fear and pain at first, due to the apparent seriousness of the injury, these were healed, and further proof was progressively shown of God's power to heal. Every muscle was restored, and stiff joints and swelling disappeared.
To me this was a remarkable healing by the power of Mind where, ordinarily, surgical and material aid would have seemed essential. For this healing and for the "perfect love" that "casteth out fear" I am very grateful.
In the business world I have been able to apply my understanding of Christian Science to problems that have appeared, such as depression, lack, inharmonious environment, and conflicting personalities. When I lost sight of self as much as possible and regarded activity as supply filling a needed demand, opportunities that were before hidden began to unfold.
I cannot fail to include my gratitude for the great help I have had in applying Mrs. Eddy's teachings to experiences dealing with human relationships. Her writings are full of wonderful counsel in regard to applying unselfishness, kindness, tact, good humor, silence, understanding, and love in our daily associations. It seems so grand to be freed from a sense of differing personalities and temperaments.
I am grateful for other physical and mental healings and comfort in times of grief and loss; for healings and the power of Truth realized by those close and dear to me; and I am very grateful for having had class instruction.
In our gratitude to Mrs. Eddy we can to some extent help to realize the great blessing of Christian Science with its message of hope for the world. On page 180 of Science and Health we read, "When man is governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, man knows that with God all things are possible." —Addison Culver, St. Louis, Missouri.
