The first healing through Christian Science...

The first healing through Christian Science which I witnessed was that of our twelve-year-old daughter. Her eyes became so badly infected that we called a physician. He treated her for pinkeye, but the trouble did not yield, and he frankly admitted he did not understand the case. He recommended a specialist, who stated that the infection was from the pollen of wild flowers, which she was fond of gathering. He treated the case for several months, when the child's eyes were in such a desperate condition that the specialist made this statement: "It may take a year, perhaps two, and she may lose her sight entirely."

One day a former neighbor, making a business call, saw our daughter, and asked me if I knew anything about Christian Science. Learning that I did not, he asked if I would consider giving it a trial. I replied I would try anything.

A practitioner was given the case, and she called that evening. I shall never forget the statements she made. She asked if we believed that God is Love, and said, "If God is Love, do you think He would create a poisonous substance that could destroy sight?" That reasoning was so convincing to us that we accepted it at its full worth, and the following Sunday, which, if I remember correctly, was four days after the first visit of the practitioner, our daughter attended the Christian Science Sunday School, and the next day returned to her regular studies.

The following experience was an awakening to me. I had an ailment, supposedly heart trouble, which attacked me at frequent intervals, and, after agonizing days in bed, it left me so exhausted that I began to question if life was worth the price. However, during the time that my whole attention was on our daughter, I did not have a single attack. Sometime later, while in a larger city for a day and an evening, combining business and pleasure, I felt one of these attacks coming. I excused myself from the party and found a practitioner's office, and on entering fainted. After I regained consciousness it was some time before I could remember how I came to be there. The healing was instantaneous. Our party had tickets for a performance that night, and I was able to attend, no one but myself knowing what had occurred. Our train being somewhat late, it was three o'clock in the morning when we reached home.

These two beautiful healings took place over twenty years ago, and have been permanent. For the loving care of the practitioners and for the many physical benefits which our family and I have received since then from Christian Science, I am truly grateful. But for the spiritual blessings coming from my daily study of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, for the periodicals and our dear Leader's writings, for the pattern Christ Jesus outlined, and also for class instruction, I find words inadequate to express my sincere and humble gratitude.— (Mrs.) Sarah F.
