Permanency of Good

"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." That promise, together with daily study of the entire ninety-first Psalm, was of great comfort to a Christian Scientist on several occasions, especially at a time when serious danger threatened. For a few seconds the mesmerism of fear filled her thoughts, but she wholeheartedly turned to God, and studied this Psalm until the mesmerism had gone.

The student then remembered that through her study of Christian Science she had become familiar with the fundamental truth that there is one Mind, God, good; that the one Mind, God, governs the universe, and that the real man is spiritual, not material. The student had seen the supremacy of God made manifest where a sense of disease had seemed to be prevalent. The steadfast conviction that God, good, alone is real had resulted in complete freedom. She knew that the healing had been completed only when she had claimed her divine sonship with God, when she had stopped quibbling with the subtle suggestions of the carnal mind. She understood that the problem connected with war was something to be faced just as the problem of disease had to be faced; that the mesmerism which surrounded the one was no more real than the mesmerism which surrounded the other, and that war no more belongs to God's kingdom than does disease. Just as in infinite good there is no disease, so in infinite good there is no war.

From her home the student has a wonderful view over Mont Blanc and a lovely blue lake. Trees on the shore are reflected in the lake. The whole landscape at the time of this experience gave an impression of serenity and beauty which she had seldom noticed in such a degree before. The following passage on page 306 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy came to her thought: "Undisturbed amid the jarring testimony of the material senses, Science, still enthroned, is unfolding to mortals the immutable, harmonious, divine Principle,—is unfolding Life and the universe, ever present and eternal." The conviction that Science "is unfolding Life and the universe" dispelled the mesmeric belief of war or limited freedom, and made way for a great sense of confidence and unwavering trust in God, omnipotent good. Although there were many dark hours to face, the experience was rendered easier through the light and inspiration which the revelation of Christian Science had given her.
