Christian Science is based upon the inspired Word of the Bible. There is nothing in its teaching that cannot be logically deduced from the omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience of God, good.
It is a common practice of critics to classify Christian Science with faith-healing. Those who practice the latter have usually no understanding of Christian Science and generally repudiate its teaching. Christian Science demands an understanding of God as the divine Principle of all that exists, together with the application of its stated rules.
That there is a large number of deaths needlessly caused by the refusal of Christian Scientists to call in medical aid is untrue. On the contrary, Christian Science has saved hundreds of thousands from recognized hopeless conditions. The adverse comments of some coroners and medical practitioners constitute no correct data on which to base any sound judgment of the healing work accomplished by Christian Science. This metaphysical and spiritual method of healing disease is rapidly gaining ground because of its superior efficacly.
Christian Scientists are taught to obey the laws of the land, and, where the law requires it, they call in a medical practitioner for children under the age of sixteen. But it should be stated that children readily respond to Christian Science treatment, children's ailments such as colds, measles, and mumps being quickly met.
Dr. Alexis Carrel, member of the Rockefeller Institute, in his recent book "Man, the Unknown," states: "Our preent conception of the influence of prayer upon pathological lesions is based upon the observation of patients who have been cured almost instantaneously of various affections.... The only condition indispensable to the occurrence of the phenomenon is prayer. But there is no need for the patient himself to pray, or even to have any religious faith. It is sufficient that someone around him be in a state of prayer. Such facts are of profound significance" (p. 49). This is the opinion of one of the greatest living medical authorities in the United States.
We are living in progressive times, with thought expanding rapidly into the metaphysical realm. Many beliefs, long held. have been thrown overboard, and many others are being challenged Sixty years ago, Mrs. Eddy declared with prophetic voice that belief in a material basis was slowly yielding to the idea of a metaphysical basis.
Mrs. Eddy's remarkable declaration (Science and Health, p. 468 ), "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation," will at length be seen as the one and only real fact of existence. Christian Scientists are recognizing this fact in some measure, and their demonstrations in governing human conditions harmoniously are the result. All undesirable conditions can be eliminated through the application of spiritual law, even as Jesus controlled them. Christian Science presents this law.
