When a little child I was taught by a spiritually-minded...
When a little child I was taught by a spiritually-minded mother to pray to God for goodness. Therefore, when a few years later this mother passed on and I was told that this same God had taken her, my faith suffered such a shock that I turned from Him altogether. As I grew older the lack of religion in my life troubled me and I began a search through the orthodox churches, but found no peace or answer to the unsatisfied craving in my thought. Finally, under the strain of burdens in the home, and mentally disheartened, I suffered a complete nervous breakdown; it seemed that no function of the body was normal.
For some years I sought healing in allopathy, homeopathy, and some other systems. Remedies were taken for headaches, indigestion, constipation of lifelong standing, and other organic troubles, with no lasting effect. Even an operation brought no relief. At that time I was wearing glasses for astigmatism. As it seemed to me, my only hope was that I might pass on.
As I was too incapacitated most of the time to be useful, I spent much time in reading to keep from thinking. It was then that "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was brought to me. Although I tried repeatedly, I could not grasp its message and laid it aside. Some weeks later I met a sweet, happy woman who told me in a simple way what Christian Science would do, and very soon I had the opportunity to learn for myself. I was seized with a paroxysm of pain that ordinarily would have prostrated me for days. I telephoned my new friend and she gave me a practitioner's address; but before succeeded in finding her there was complete relief from pain, and I was able to eat everything served at dinner with no ill effects. Later I learned from my friend that when she realized that I would not be able to reach the practitioner, she had prayed for me.
From that time I became an enthusiastic student of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's books. They were clear and simple to me then. My first visit to the practitioner brought the comforting words that God had not taken my mother. This lifted the burden of years of grief and turned my faith again unreservedly to God. Then began joyous, buoyant days. The uplifting realization that there is a dependabel Principle to use at all times gave zest to the conflict. The certainty of results from correct application of rules, gave courage, strength, and finally success. But best of all came the assurance that with this exact and practical Science one could help others, birds and animals as well as one's fellow men. The great fact that it is God alone "who healeth all thy disease" was being demonstrated. Glasses were forgotten because not needed. Constipation left. So one by one—some quickly, others slowly—the many ills departed. Through the daily study and spiritualization of thought unlovely traits of disposition were recognized as evils and began to melt away.
During the intervening years, dislocated and fractured bones and severe bruises and sprains have been overcome, with no other aid than Christian Science. The tissue surrounding teeth has been renewed and dental work greatly facilitated. Financial difficulties and church problems have been solved. Healing has come through the illumination of a By-Law in the Manual of The Mother Church, or some phrase from Mrs. Eddy's other writings, as well as during church services and lectures. My heart overflows with gratitude to God for Mrs. Eddy's devotion. I am increasingly thankful for her priceless writings, that continuously point the way to God.
