"Look up!"

How seldom, before we know the truth as taught in Christian Science, do we lift our eyes above the weariness of material belief in sin, sorrow, sickness, and death! This fact was very clearly illustrated to a student of Christian Science who was just learning to take the first faltering steps out of the wilderness of doubt and apparent darkness, toward the glorious light that comes with a true understanding of God and of man in His image.

The student was returning from a journey which had brought back many depressing memories of the past, and her thinking was satiating itself with self-pity and regret. As a consequence, this mental condition became manifested in a form of illness which seemed so violent that it was thought advisable to discontinue the journey at the next stop.

As the train neared the city, a large hill loomed in view, covered with the usual display of billboards. The student's gaze rested upon a large sign with but two words, "Look up!" intended to attract the traveler's attention to an advertisement farther up the hill. These two words were sufficient to startle her dormant thought into alertness, and she immediately became aware of the reason for her sense of suffering. Instead of looking up to Principle, the student's thought had been burrowing beneath the debris of false belief, holding a false view of God and man. Immediately, as her thought was lifted to Truth's resplendent ideas, the healing power was apparent, and the trouble completely vanished.
