The Free Press contains a letter over the signature "L. R." which comments on an earlier letter of mine in your columns. Your correspondent is by no means the first who has asked how sin and disease can be reconciled with a creation controlled by an infinitely loving Mind or intelligence. That question is at least as old as the book of Job. It is, as a matter of fact, the very question which has aroused hundreds of thousands of people to investigate Christian Science, and to test its teachings by overcoming physical as well as moral discord in their own experience. A child may apply his mistaken belief that two times two is three, and suffer accordingly. That suffering is the result of ignorance; it does not disprove or affect the eternally available truth that two times two is not three, but four. The physical senses are as incapable of presenting God's spiritual creation as the child's mistake is of stating the truth about numbers. The false evidence of the senses will be overcome not, as your correspondent ironically anticipates, by blaming the stenographer or the typesetter, but by correcting ignorance through a better understanding of the truth of Being.
In Mrs. Eddy's statement, quoted in my former letter from page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all," the divine Mind, or God, is plainly referred to, not the so-called mind or sense-impressions of mortals. The latter may change and may deceive, but God is "the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."
