The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

London, England (Fourth Church).

Lecturer: John W. Doorly; introduced by Mrs. Minnie Hawker, who said:—

Seven years ago there came to visit me a friend whom I had not seen for many years; and we talked on the subject of religion. I did not understand one word he said concerning his religious views, but one thing I knew: whatever that religion was, it had transformed him. I found that he had been released from the bondage of an ungovernable temper, dullness of intellect, an unloving and unlovable nature, excessive fear of failure in business and in life, extreme poverty, wretchedness, and sickness. Is it surprising that I made up my mind to seek the truth which had made him free? I began to study Christian Science with never a thought of physical healing for myself, but out of curiosity and with the hope of laying hold of a most beautiful religion. With the gradual and radical change of thought, there has come about a betterment of every condition of my life generally. Spiritual sight and hearing have been bestowed on me, with the result that physical sight and hearing have been improved. I have been healed of the necessity of wearing glasses, and deafness has vanished. I have been raised to a life of activity and usefulness, whereas ten years ago I was held in bondage to weakness and fatigue. Words cannot describe the joy for the character healing which goes on day by day as I study and apply and endeavor to live this great truth.

Mount Vernon, New York (First Church).

Lecturer: Bicknell Young; introduced by Mrs. Elizabeth F. Waldron, who said:—

Christ Jesus said: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Several years ago I was seeking something that would make my burden light. I had been a sufferer for over seven years from stomach trouble and all its attendant ills, and like the woman in the Scriptures, "had suffered many things of many physicians ... and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse." At this point my husband experienced a physical healing through Christian Science treatment, from a trouble which had held him in bondage for a number of years. During this time it was my privilege to read to him from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and by the reading of this textbook alone, I too was healed, and my burden of pain dropped away; and I have found, during the intervening years, that as I come unto Christ, Truth, my burden indeed is light.
