During the more than fifty years of the existence of Christian Science, it has been subjected to misrepresentation and attack in much the same manner as that which characterized the actions of those who persecuted Jesus himself, misinterpreted and maligned his teachings, and made martyrs of those of his followers who had the courage to stand for the truth of what he taught. So far as Christian Science is concerned, its traducers in most instances have tried to take advantage of what they supposed was the credulity of their audiences. Their attacks are based upon their own unprovable statements and interpretations of what they think Christian Science is. In so doing, they have not hesitated to garble and distort what was written by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and have sought to confuse the minds of their hearers by disputations on dogmatic and doctrinal points upon which there is a marked diversity of opinion even among the multitudinous evangelical creeds and churches.

The basic teachings of Christian Science are all contained in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the other writings of Mary Baker Eddy, and are exemplified in the lives and practice of her followers. A reading of the textbook by any person of ordinary intelligence will serve to refute the distorted statements made by those who, in the name of the Master, whose basic teaching was love, manifest their lack of Christianity by waging a campaign of hate and vilification.

Christian Science is simply the teaching of Jesus in its practical purity and simplicity. It stands upon the fundamental premise of the omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence of God, as capable of proof and demonstration in practical daily experience, both in reforming the sinner and in healing the sick. It is based wholly on the Bible,—the same Bible (the authorized King James Version) that is used by and is the foundation of nearly all Christian religions. It inculcates such a love for the Bible and such a desire to know its teachings, that it is safe to say that no other people in the world read and study the Bible more than, or perhaps as much as, Christian Scientists. The Bible is the Christian Scientist's daily companion; and he reads it and uses it not merely for the purposes of intellectual occupation or in the observance of a religious custom, but as a daily guide for his faith and conduct.
