I had known of Christian Science for some time before I finally accepted it. For a great many years I had been what one would term worldly, seeking to a large extent the indulgence of my own personal pleasures, not being much imbued with proper desires and aims in life. Because of extensive travels I believed I had had enough experience to meet nearly any difficult situation. Alas, for such beliefs! You may know how they led me into a mental maze of erroneous thinking, which expressed itself in inharmonious living conditions.

The night began to be "far spent." This mortal aspect of existence and its flimsy offerings began to mean nothing to me. An inner desire for better and higher things was constantly in my thoughts. The door of Christian Science lay before me; and so I went up to it and knocked. My friends, you must know how quickly it was opened; and the blessed sunlight that streamed through as a result nearly blined me at first. Oh, with what tender loving-kindness the dear practitioner to whom God directed my steps receive me! Right there and then she made me see that the blessed child of God could inherit nothing but good from his heavenly Father, and that I had not strayed beyond the help and protecting care of divine Love. At this first visit I was instantaneously healed of smoking and drinking, to which I had clung for many years.

Five years have now elapsed since that happy day, and it is with a heart overflowing with gratitude that I write these lines in the hope that some brother may be helped by them. All that I am and all I ever hope to be I owe to Christian Science. Besides having been healed of smoking and drinking, I have met and overcome catarrh, colds, fever, an inclination to be lazy, and so on. Instead of being selfish I am now more loving; instead of being impatient, I am quietly persevering.
