Our seminary critic appears still to believe that the late Professor James, in classifying Christian Science with faith cure and quasi metaphysical systems, knew more about Christian Science than do Christian Scientists, although Professor James was not a student of Mrs. Eddy's writings and, consequently, was not in a position fairly to estimate the subject.

Christian Science declares that God is the divine Principle and only cause of all that really exists. If, as the Scripture tells us, "God is a Spirit," the universe including man must be spiritual. Of course Spirit never created its opposite, matter, and if Spirit did not creat it, matter was not created; in which event matter, the material universe, and mortal existence must be an illusion, a waking dream.

If Spirit is the only Mind there is, the only thinking must be spiritual or godlike thinking. To put it in another way, if divine Mind is infinite, there is no finite or mortal mind. Mortals believe that they have minds of their own capable of thinking both good and evil, but Christian Science has come to correct this error, to educate mortals out of the erroneous belief in an existence apart from God. "The dream that matter and error are something," writes Mrs. Eddy on page 347 of Science and Health, "must yield to reason and revelation. Then mortals will behold the nothingness of sickness and sin, and sin and sickness will disappear from consciousness."
