The Lectures

First Church of Christ, Scientist, on Prospect Street, was filled when John W. Doorly lectured on Christian Science. He was introduced by Alfred T. Child, clerk of the local church, who said: —

Today, as never before, the world needs a clearer idea about spiritual things. In order to obtain this clearer perception we must start with an entirely new concept of God. For centuries men have believed that God was capable of being both good and evil, and these two forces were constantly warring in His creation. This wrong conception of God has brought untold misery to man in every age. Christian Science begins by declaring that God is infinite good, and that man as the child of God inherits the right to freedom, health, happiness, and holiness. You will remember that in the book of Genesis God is recorded as pronouncing all His creation good. Hence evil could never have entered the world through divine power.

If Christ had believed in both good and evil, he could never have performed the wondrous works that he did. The healing power that Jesus demonstrated was lost two or three hundred years after he disappeared from human sight. This happened because men insisted on mixing their own ideas about religion with the teachings of Christ Jesus and because the power of evil was again reinstated. About fifty years ago Christian Science, based upon the truths Jesus taught, was brought to the attention of the world by Mrs. Eddy. Not until she had proved this Science by many remarkable cures did she give her discovery to the world. Since that time thousands of sufferers from all kinds of ills have sought and found relief in Christian Science.—Stamford Advocate.
