In 1909, while taking account of stock in a large store, I...

In 1909, while taking account of stock in a large store, I became very ill. I went home and to bed, and a doctor was sent for, who treated me three weeks; but he could not diagnose the case and so called another physician. They held a consultation, and when my wife went to the office of the first doctor, he told her that I had an abscess on my liver, while the other one said I had a tumor, and that if I was operated on it would kill me. The first doctor said that I would live but two or three weeks and told my wife to let me die in peace. I myself believed it was a case of rheumatism, and told the doctor so, but I remained in bed more than a year and could not move without help.

In all, I had five different doctors, and when I became able I was carried about in a chair. I went to different health resorts, including hot springs, but received no benefit from any source. While stopping at the house of a Christian Scientist I became interested in Science and Health and made it my study while there. I had lost flesh, but I began to improve, and continued to gain so far as the rheumatism was concerned; but the medicine I had taken had injured my stomach, and again I was in a very critical condition. As I could eat no solid food without great suffering, I asked for help in Christian Science, and with the aid of practitioner all my troubles vanished. I can truthfully say that Christian Science has not failed me in any hour of need.

I thank the good God for His loving-kindness. I also love and am grateful to Mrs. Eddy, that grand woman who has done so much good for mankind.
