"AND YE SHALL KNOW."

Sometimes a little thing will arouse thought and bring home a deep lesson gained in the light of spiritual consciousness. Near the writer's home stands a large pine tree in which a flock of purple grackles make their home. One day in the early summer unusual noises were heard, and stepping outside it was found that a young bird, able to fly only a little, was upon the ground, and the parents seemed conscious of the little one's apparent danger. In trying to get it to fly, the parent birds would constantly perch above its head, earnestly calling all the while. After a few hours it had risen to the piazza rail, and later was seen on a pile of lumber, with the parent birds still calling from a height above. Not once did they descend to the level of the birdling, as if to say "Go up;" it was always "Come up."

So it must be in our lives. If we would help those about us to lift their thoughts from a material basis, from the dangers of belief in laws of matter, it must ever be from a higher standpoint of thinking. No effectual work can be done upon the ground where human fears would make realities of unrealities. We must rise above belief in matter and its power to the level of Spirit, the only reality. As our Leader says: "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man" (Science and Health, p. 393).

God never requires of us things impossible for us to accomplish. There are no imaginary or theoretical spiritual heights, but every demonstration made, of whatever nature, is a step upward, and henceforth our work must ever be from this higher plane, for we can lift another's thought no higher than our own. Jesus said, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me;" and Christian Science is teaching the world today that these words of the Master were simply the statement of a great spiritual law, divinely natural and readily demonstrated.
