Mirage

Behind a desert storm, the sea before,A heat-dim beach and vibrant air between;I glimpsed, then clear as thrown upon a screenA city, as of smoke, masked yonder shore.

The Sower

I planted once a seed and went my way.

From Church

The demand for church

I like to think of each church that grows up in a community as that community's answered prayer for the presence of the saving Christ—the message of God's love for humanity.

The Ego God

How golden is the sunshine that coaxes out the flowers! The sky is blue with fleecy clouds, the birds sing in the bowers,While children laugh in pure delight and love the happy hours:Oh, life is blooming everywhere, in gleams and glimpses glad and fair;We see it in its varied sheen, but back of all is Life unseen,And Life itself is God.

Freedom

Praise be to God, and blessed be this day When men, released from the despotic sway Of mortal mind and error's thrall, may rise And climb the mount to Truth's own paradise.

Rejoice in the Lord

Rejoice! Again I say, Rejoice! But not alone with lute and voice;Nay, first know joy dwells in thine heart,For that thou hast in Truth thy part,Then love from out thy heart will glow,And all the world shall surely know,Not by thine anthems or thy creeds,Nor by thy words, but by thy deeds,Which testimony true affordThat thou hast been with Christ the Lord.

God's Works

The works of God beyond compare are great; Not merely mountain huge, and glacier stream,And stars, and sun with golden morning beam,—Although with joy these things we contemplate,Since all that truly is, Mind doth create,—But rather doth the Lord most gracious seemBecause His hand hath made the earth to teemWith blessings fitted to our needy state.

The Pilot

"When Love is at the helm of thought,"*Securely moves the ship; The filling sails of impulse caught,The staying ropes and rigging taut,And songs upon each lip.

A Song in the Night

"It is so dark," I said, "I cannot sing;In such a gloom I have no heart for song.

Gratitude

A noble friend I had, who richly pouredGifts, favors, gold upon me; and I throveIn all my ways.

The Day of Peace

'Tis coming yet, though dimly seenBeyond the clouds where cannon roar—A day shall know no more rapine,And war's rude note be heard no more.
