Eye on the world: The power of Love

In “The quiet quality that upliftsThe Christian Science Monitor states, “A culture buffeted by conflict, controversy, and coarseness can be improved with one simple ingredient.” The Monitor further explains, “The substance is ‘philia,’ which goes by its generic name ‘brotherly love.’ ” Qualities such as compassion “will never lead the evening news or top the Drudge Report,” notes the article, but they “build, make better, heal.”

Ideas on this subject:

From the Bible:

Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another.
Romans 12:10

Let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
I John 4:7

From the writings of Mary Baker Eddy:

God is universal; confined to no spot, defined by no dogma, appropriated by no sect. Not more to one than to all, is God demonstrable as divine Life, Truth, and Love; and His people are they that reflect Him—that reflect Love.
Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 150

The human affections need to be changed from self to benevolence and love for God and man; changed to having but one God and loving Him supremely, and helping our brother man. This change of heart is essential to Christianity, and will have its effect physically as well as spiritually, healing disease.
Miscellaneous Writings, pp. 50–51

Related articles from the Christian Science Sentinel:

In “ ‘Let brotherly love continue’ ”: “When men love God supremely and extend that love to their fellow men, the result is sure—they will benefit spiritually and physically….” And “The forces of evil may seem to try hard ... to make us believe that goodness and love are often impotent before evil’s false claims…. In face of this falsity, this lie, we must stand courageous and firm, for it is but the bluff of supposititious mortal mind. God is infinite, and therefore everywhere.”

In “Be Compassionate!”: “What is the source of all love and compassion? It is God, divine Love. From Him comes all that is good. And man, who is God’s idea, reflects good unlimitedly; reflects the love which inspires compassion, unlimitedly. We must know this truth and demonstrate it. We must realize that it is the law of our being to reflect Love, and thus to be merciful, pure, just, and kind.”
