Eye on the world: Stabilizing South Sudan

In “South Sudan: world’s youngest country marks a complex milestoneThe Christian Science Monitor reports that South Sudan was created out of “sky-high hopes for a bright future” when it declared independence five years ago. However, the young country has been bridled by internal political conflict that turned to widespread violence. “Focused on fighting the opposition, the fledgling government’s attention and funds were diverted from properly being able to invest in national development.” Infrastructure, education, health, and social services were neglected. Drought and a punctured economy forced many to flee for refuge elsewhere. Now, with the violence earlier this month in South Sudan suggesting the return of a civil war, stabilizing measures are crucially needed to set the world’s newest country in a suitable direction.

Ideas on this subject:

From the Bible:

The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

Isaiah 52:10

From the writings of Mary Baker Eddy:

It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love. Mankind will become perfect in proportion as this fact becomes apparent, war will cease and the true brotherhood of man will be established.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 467

The scientific sense of being which establishes harmony, enters into no compromise with finiteness and feebleness. It undermines the foundations of mortality, of physical law, breaks their chains, and sets the captive free, opening the doors for them that are bound.

In “God Governs Governments”: “Christian Science reiterates the truths inherent in the teachings of Christ Jesus, namely, that there is in reality only one government, that of divine Mind, Spirit, the Supreme Ruler of the universe, including man, His spiritual image and likeness. The Christian Scientist endeavors to keep this fact always before him, trusting God wholeheartedly with the government not only of his home, his business, his church, but also of his country and of all nations.” And “Christian Scientists have a unique and challenging opportunity to rise above the material sense of government or misgovernment. They can demonstrate that God governs at all times and in all places, that His government is supreme, and ‘that all things work together for good to them that love God.’ ”

In “Trusting Divine Power”: “Christian Science stands firmly for the presence and government of God, the eternal preservation of man, made in His likeness, and the powerlessness of all that denies God’s intelligent control of the universe.” And “Trusting divine power, we have nothing to fear, and infinite harmony unfolds before us.”
