In “Olympic security: Brazil adjusts to new threats with help from global partners” The Christian Science Monitor reports that ahead of the start of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, Brazil is preparing for both domestic and foreign security threats—including large scale terrorist attacks and more isolated individual threats of assaults and robberies. “Brazil has grabbed one negative headline after another in the lead-up to the Games. Its political and economic crises, combined with deep-seated domestic security concerns and a high murder rate, have given many observers pause when it comes to confidence in Brazil’s preparedness to host an expected 500,000 visitors.” However, Brazil has joined forces with international partners to learn from the past—both from terrorist attacks and successfully held large-scale events. And, Brazil will not be alone in managing security for the Olympic games—with the aid of 55 government's gathering surveillance intelligence in Brazil. “Successfully hosting the sporting event will give the country – better known for its deeply troubled domestic security record, and underpaid law enforcement suffering poor working conditions – a positive international bump."
