Eye on the world: Real beauty

In an article titled “France's ban on super-thin models: who will it really help? The Christian Science Monitor writes of a plan that would make the use of “dangerously skinny” models illegal in France. However, the Monitor notes, “while it’s hard to knock its intent,” the plan probably won’t have “much of an impact on persistent notions of beauty that value thinness above all.”

Passages from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy:

“The recipe for beauty is to have less illusion and more Soul, to retreat from the belief of pain or pleasure in the body into the unchanging calm and glorious freedom of spiritual harmony” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 247–248 ).

“Beauty, as well as truth, is eternal; but the beauty of material things passes away, fading and fleeting as mortal belief. Custom, education, and fashion form the transient standards of mortals. Immortality, exempt from age or decay, has a glory of its own, — the radiance of Soul. Immortal men and women are models of spiritual sense, drawn by perfect Mind and reflecting those higher conceptions of loveliness which transcend all material sense” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 247 ).

“All beauty and goodness are in and of Mind, emanating from God; but when we change the nature of beauty and goodness from Mind to matter, the beauty is marred, through a false conception, and, to the material senses, evil takes the place of good” (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 6 ).
