Eye on the world: Prayer for government

In one of her books, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, wrote, “I am asked, ‘What are your politics?’ I have none, in reality, other than to help support a righteous government; to love God supremely, and my neighbor as myself” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 276 ).

Here are some thoughts on praying to support “a righteous government” at home and abroad.

“A vote for good government everywhere” speaks of how the writer’s prayer about a another country it helped him clarify his thoughts about his own government.  He observes, “. . . when informed by prayer, we can gain peace about governmental issues, and our decisions become less about people, politics, or party, and more about such things as wisdom, honesty, and stability in government.”

In “Love and prayer for government,” the writer says, “From my own experience, which includes years of service as a chaplain, along with ministers of other faiths, in both houses of our state legislature, I know that prayer helps us see the love that is there.”

“Brotherly love in action” speaks about self-government, explaining, “The basis for brotherly love is the assurance of God’s loving control over all and the recognition of man’s purely spiritual and good nature as the image of God.”
