Eye on the World: new hope for India-Pakistan relations

India’s new prime minister Narenda Modi broke new ground when he invited Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan‘s prime minister to attend his swearing-in — and Sharif, who is eager to improve relations, accepted. India and Pakistan have fought three wars against each other, and there are still issues that need to be resolved — such as the thorny problem of Kashmir and the terrorist attack on Mumbai in 2008 — but this prospective thaw in relations sends a hopeful signal throughout the region.

Our prayers can support this momentum for progress and peace. “India, Pakistan: ‘Destination Peace’ ” describes efforts for peace between India and Pakistan, and how each of us — no matter where we live — can contribute to these efforts. In our prayers we can build on cultural similarities instead of differences, pray that injustices be honestly addressed, and focus “on the spiritual heritage that is common to all people: qualities such as kindness, generosity, compassion, tenderness, honesty, and integrity.”

You might also enjoy “India—prayer for progress amid the challenges,” which was featured in the Sentinel a number of years ago. The writer notes that “active love enables us to see, with conviction and clarity, the reflection of God expressed in all people. This view includes forgiveness, and it comes with showers of blessings.” She describes how our prayers can reveal previously unseen solutions to corruption in government, poverty, and political apathy.
