New: Nigerian plane crash
A Nigerian airliner crashed into a crowded neighborhood in the city of Lagos on Sunday afternoon, killing all 153 people on board and an unknown number of people on the ground. The cause of the crash hasn’t been determined yet, but the director-general of Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Authority said the older plane was having engine troubles.
“Always, we can think clearly” discusses how we can pray to support safety in the skies. The author shares how he was able to prayerfully respond to news of a plane crash with the recognition that God overrules fear.
New: Four guilty in plot against Danish newspaper
A Danish court this week found four men guilty of plotting a terrorist attack on the Jyllands-Posten newspaper Copenhagen in 2010. The attack was planned as revenge for cartoons the paper published several years earlier illustrating the Prophet Muhammad. The four men, all Muslims living in Sweden, were arrested hours before the foiled attack. They now face up to 16 years in jail.
“How to put a stop to terrorism,” a conversation with a journalist, an Army veteran, and the founder of a non-profit peace organization, offers ideas for how our prayers can dissolve the threat of terrorism. A recognition of God’s embracing love for all humanity – not just one sect or denomination – prevents evil acts and a mentality that would harm others.
New: How social capital helps communities
Research suggests that towns with strong social ties – ones in which neighbors help each other out – enjoy an economic advantage over more insular communities. Places with higher levels of community altruism have lost fewer jobs during the recession than places with lower levels, because neighbors are able to pool their talents and assist each other through tough times.
“Drawn to good” discusses how the Christ, God’s voice speaking to His children, draws us together to support and uplift each other. Stronger community ties, and greater respect and compassion, are the natural results of our prayers!
